New Theme!

Hey there!

I thought it was time for a more modern, updated blog. Please bear with me as I put in new links (I haven’t finished my books page yet) and make sure everything’s where it should be. I’d like to put an archives page, so you can access over 5 years of blog posts, but I don’t know how. If you google my name and the title of the blog post, if you can remember the one you want to read, that works. But that’s not exactly the best way to do this is it?

Anyone know where my archives are? 😉 Please comment – yay or nay about the new theme, and if it’s nay, what do I need to fix?

I can’t wait to hear from you.

UPDATE: YES! I found the Category Cloud widget! Now you can look at my archives by clicking on any subject that interests you in the Category Cloud in the right-hand side Widget Bar. Have fun! There’s lots there.

Getting by with a lot of help from my friends! Thanks again to Patty and Nadia's Wire Art and everyone else who came out to support me when I went to read from Strangely, Incredibly Good at Pincourt Public Library

The Groovy Granny Has Arrived! (or: What I Didn’t See Coming)

Some of you wonderful regular readers have also been reading my children’s poetry blog, A Children’s Poetry Place. A few months ago, I told you I’ve been working on a new children’s book this year.

In actual fact, I’ve been working on this collection of poems for a decade. Two of them were in my first ebook, Bubble Mud and Other Poems (Electric Ebook Publishing, 2001) and the rights have since reverted to me, so I’m republishing them. The others -including a few limericks, haiku and cinquain – are my absolute favorites among the many children’s poems  I’ve written and polished since the birth of our daughter, Kayla.

What I didn’t see coming was that one day, our daughter would ask to illustrate the poems, and that her illustrations would be really, really good —and funny. What I didn’t see coming was that she’d be the illustrator I’ve been searching and searching for all these years for The Groovy Granny —and that I’d be the publisher! (through my registered business, Graceful Publications).

We’ve created our first children’s poetry book together. It’s perfect for reading to preschoolers and beginner readers, and middle graders will love reading it aloud.  You can preview the entire book and have the option of buying it in softcover, image wrap hardcover, or hardcover with dust jacket (the hardcovers are totally worth the extra dollars, they are gorgeous, bookstore quality) HERE:

Thanks so much for taking a look at our ‘baby.’

Best wishes,

Heather and Kayla

Hey, Cyberpals

I’ve just discovered Flag Counter, a widget that allows me to find out more about who’s visiting my site, and I have to say, I’m a little obsessed. In the last two days since I installed it, people from 29 different countries have visited Where the Butterflies Go.

Imagine if I could host that party in person! I’d have to serve cake. Coffee cake, crepes flambé, and ice cream. Flowers, lovely amber-coloured dishes and glasses; candles everywhere. A punch with the good stuff in it, a virgin one, and some coffee. And of course, a great mix of music in an attempt to suit all your tastes. I’d read my poetry, and you’d read yours. Then I’d make you strap on a nunchuck controller and play The West Wing for Wii (just wanted to see who’s actually reading this).

I’m learning a little about each of your countries every time you visit. Flag Counter has an option to click on the country name and learn about its history. Every time someone from a new area visits, I’m reading about your country. For instance, I knew very little about Lithuania, until I read this here:

http://s03.flagcounter.com/factbook/lt/1y

It prompted me to scan the Net for some more information on the countries I haven’t visited and know little about. I’m not getting much writing work done today.

I love history and social studies–mix that with a variety of people from around the world who enjoy poetry and photography, and I’m in heaven.

These days, our attention spans are limited, and it seems there aren’t enough hours in the day. Thanks for spending some of your precious time with me here at Where the Butterflies Go. I may just have to host a blog party soon.

Best Wishes,

Heather

Leaping to the Top!

Congratulations to Tracey Riddell-Ireland, the winner in my ‘By Leaps and Bounds’ photo contest! Her beautiful artwork got the most votes, but in my opinion, this contest was full of winners. I came out the biggest winner, because you readers lifted my spirits all summer long with your wonderful entries and stories about how you were inspired to take chances and ‘Leap.’ Some of you even befriended one another (or became closer friends) during this contest. It’s been an amazing experience–so thanks to all who played along. What’s next?
