Love, Laughter, and a Touch of Magic: Why I Write Romcoms

When I first became a published poet, I never imagined I’d end up writing romantic comedies. But somehow, poetry led me to screenplay writing, and that led me to prose, and prose led me to falling head over heels… for writing stories about people who fall head over heels.

These days, my romcoms explore all kinds of love: contemporary stories grounded in real-life awkwardness and joy, and magical ones where enchantment sneaks into everyday life.

What do they all share?

✨ Swoonworthy heroes who make your heart skip.

✨ Feisty heroines who say what they mean and know how to kick some serious butt

✨ And love that shows up in the oddest circumstances: free round-the-world plane tickets, accidental double bookings, piglets leaping out of transport trucks, surprise leaps back in time.

I write romance with main characters in their late 20s to early 40s, because that’s when many of us are still figuring ourselves out. I want to remind readers that love doesn’t have a timeline.

Love just happens, usually when you least expect it, and more often than not, it arrives with a touch of comedy, like a wink from the universe.

And yes, there’s still poetry. I can’t help myself. It’s tucked into the rhythm of my sentences, the way my characters see the world, shaping my metaphors, the rhythm of my prose and the way my characters speak and feel.

But through it all, there’s been a constant magic: you.

To my WordPress family, my Goodreads friends, my Insta family, my Facebook readers, and the Threaders I chat with on a daily basis—thank you!

Your comments, reviews, DMs, email notes, and hugs (so glad we can do that again!) at book events make this writing life feel less like a job and more like a shared adventure.

You cheer me on when finding the right words feels tricky, and you celebrate with me when the characters finally kiss (or leap back in time!).

I write these books to make you laugh, swoon, and help you to believe that love can crash into your life in the oddest—and most wonderful—ways.

So if you’ve ever picked up The Ticket, Good Nights, Lauren from Last Night, Lucky, The Love Leap, or any of my other books, this is a hug from me to you.

With love and gratitude,

Heather 💖

Interview with Author Kelly Charron

I’m pleased to reintroduce my Interview with a Poet/Author Series for 2018-2019 with an interview with a very special Canadian guest: psychological thriller and urban fantasy author Kelly Charron.

Schmidt_Charron_263-5x7

Kelly Charron is the author of YA and adult psychological thrillers and urban fantasy novels. All of her novels have gritty, murderous inclinations and moderate amounts of humor. She spends far too much time consuming true crime television (and chocolate) while trying to decide if yes, it was the husband, with the wrench, in the library. Kelly has degrees in English Literature and Social Work. She has worked as a hairstylist, youth outreach worker and education assistant. She lives with her husband and cat, Moo Moo, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

You write both urban fantasy and psychological thrillers. How did you get into those genres and why do you like them?

It was a natural progression for me actually. I think authors write what they’re interested in and what naturally appeals to them. I’ve always been drawn to dark subjects that deal a lot with the human condition and psychology. I love exploring what motivates people and how they react under pressure and danger. Since I can remember I have watched and read thrillers, horror and suspense. I love unraveling mysteries.

The first book I wrote was a YA urban fantasy, but even though it wasn’t a thriller, it had a lot of darkness, secrets and death. The psychological thrillers I’ve written allow me to delve even farther into these areas, but I have a lot of fun switching between genres. I think doing so allows me to rest my imagination for that genre and I’m stronger with more inspired ideas when I come back to it.

We have being Canadian authors in common. What are some of your favourite things about Canada?

We do! What don’t I love? I’ve traveled a bit and always want to come home. Canada is such a beautiful and accepting country. The people really care about one another and I think we have a great sense of humor. Look at all the incredible comics and comedic actors that come from here. I live in British Columbia and it’s so stunning. The mountains, water, and forests are remarkable. You can literally go snowboarding and skiing in May and then wear shorts and a t-shirt to hike.

Do you think it’s harder or easier to be a novelist today than say, 20 years ago,
and why? What are some pros, and some of the cons?

Tricky question. I think it’s easier now in terms of getting your novels in front of readers. In the past, you had to get past the gatekeepers of literary agent, editor and ultimately the publishing house. Besides what was referred to as vanity presses, there weren’t other ways to see your book out in the world. Self-publishing has obviously changed the game entirely and while there are many perks that go along with that, there are some down sides. I’d say there’s a mixture in the quality of books out there now because of the lack of said gatekeepers. Some self-published works go out without editing, proof reading or revisions, however I’d say that overall, the people who are willing to sit down and complete a full manuscript are dedicated and want to make sure the book they put out is to the best of their ability.

Another downside of this is that discoverability is harder than ever. Over 1.5 million books were published in 2017 alone. That is in addition to all the other books that already exist, so you can imagine how difficult it can be to have people find your novels. Overall, I wouldn’t change it though, because it allows all authors to have a voice. My goal is to be a hybrid author, with both self-published and traditionally published novels, that way is the best of both worlds.
What’s your most recent book about and why do you think people should pick it up?

Kelly: My most recent novel is titled, WICKED FALLOUT. It follows a woman named Ryann who has been in prison for twelve years for killing multiple people when she was fifteen. After she has exhausted all of her appeals and believes she’ll die in prison, new evidence comes to light and her case gets new life under a prestigious legal team who enlist the help of a forensic psychiatrist. Dr. Clafin had the arduous task to evaluate Ryann to help determine if she should be set free or remain behind bars forever.

People should pick this book up because it is so much fun! It’s a true psychological suspense that has so many twists and turns that you won’t know what to think from chapter to chapter. Reviewers have likened the cat and mouse game between my main characters to the one between Dr. Lector and Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs films.

That sounds so cool and like something I wouldn’t be able to put down. I’m picking it up for my August TBR list! What are your hobbies besides writing?

I love hiking in the woods all around the Lower Mainland. I read as much as possible and love to paint, though I barely do because I always tell myself I should be writing. Does being addicted to Netflix count as a hobby?

Yes! It does, because I’m right there with you! If you could go anywhere and do anything, what would your ideal day be?

Easy! I would hop on a plane and fly to Salem, MA on Halloween day to tour the city. So much of my fantasy novels (because they are filled with magic and witches) are centered around Salem and Danvers. I would walk everywhere, hang out in the old cemeteries and shop in the all the stores for creepy antiques and then watch everyone dressed up in their costumes and eat too much candy.

Thank you so much for the great interview! This was so much fun.

Anytime, Kelly! Let’s tell everyone a bit more about your recent releases:

PRETTY WICKED

Social Media Promo 4-KC

A small Colorado town. An opportunity for murder.

Ryann has been raised in a strict house by her perfectionist detective father and docile mother. She plays by the rules, doing what her parents ask, getting straight As, cheering at Friday night football games, and is the voice of reason for her eclectic group of friends.

But she’s done following the rules.

Ryann’s been a good girl for far too long. She’s suppressed her dark longings to make everyone else happy.

It’s time to make herself happy—to become the person she’s always wanted to be. Unfortunately, that means a few people are going to have to die.

Her sequel, which can be read as a standalone or as part of the Wicked series, WICKED FALLOUT picks up with the main character, Ryann Wilkanson, twelve years later.

WICKED FALLOUT

Social Media Promo 2-KC

A killer’s last chance at freedom. A psychiatrist’s final decision.

Convicted of six murders when she was just fifteen, the notorious Ryann Wilkanson hasn’t been able to act on her darkest, deadliest urges for twelve years. She’s exhausted her appeals and has little hope of ever getting out of prison and back to hunting.

Until a media-hungry legal team mounts a campaign to do the impossible—get her immediately released with a commuted sentence.

Forensic psychiatrist Nancy Clafin has mere weeks to evaluate Ryann’s current mental state against her grisly past to determine if she’s changed. But under the shadow of her own questionable history, it’s not easy to separate her personal life from her professional duty.

At least that’s what Ryann is counting on.

Behind the cold steel doors of a Colorado maximum-security prison, will Nancy find a cold-blooded killer or a newly redeemed woman determined to right her past wrongs?

Where in the World?

First off, thank you readers for helping make The Ticket a Kindle bestseller in Canada and the USA in Relationship Humor! I had so much fun writing this third novel, and it’s wonderful to see you reacting to it with as much enthusiasm as I have for the characters and story. I’d love for more UK and Australian friends to discover this book! (So if you liked it, please share about it however you can).
Secondly, I could use your help answering a question for me. Did you prefer The Ticket being set in NY and around the world, or was there something intriguing to you about the Canadian-France setting of Strangely, Incredibly Good & Remarkably Great? I’ve been pleased and surprised to learn recently that the majority of my readers are American! (bless you).
It would really help me if my readers answer this question: Does setting matter to you when you read a book? Do you like to be able to relate to the place(s), or is it more interesting if it’s set in a place foreign to you?

The Wonderful World of Wattpad

Have you heard  Wattpad yet? It’s a social network designed to allow authors to showcase their work, chapter by chapter, and gain new readers. If you’re a writer, it’s a world you should discover. If you’re a reader, you just lucked out on finding millions of e-stories, some by amateurs, others by professionals, for free.

When I heard about Wattpad a year ago (from my publisher! They said I could put up an excerpt of Strangely, Incredibly Good) I wasn’t sure it was going to help me out. Surely if you can read books for free on there, you just keep on downloading free books, and never read anything else the author writes? And what about publishing my drafts? That’s embarrassing! I make so many mistakes along the way, and Wattpaders were going to read every one!

I was hesitant, but I joined. Soon, I got over the making-the-mistakes part. Readers would find them and kindly mention them to me (Hey, where’s that little cat you mentioned in Chapter 2?) Within weeks, I had thousands of reads of my first novel, and had enjoyed hundreds of fantastic comments from and funny conversations with readers. That was what made me stay. Everyone knows writers want to feel like they’re reaching an audience. Wattpad made me realize my work was interesting to 20, 30, and 40 somethings, some men, and lots of teen girls! I couldn’t believe it. I was gaining a new audience, and having fun along the way.

This past summer, I published my second novel, a sequel to Strangely, Incredibly Good called Remarkably Great. I’m not sure if having more work on the site (excerpts of my published books, and the full work The Ticket) gave me more street cred, but suddenly, The Ticket soared to #1 in Chicklit! It stayed there for a number of weeks, and I noticed an increase in Kindle sales of my first two novels and even increased sales of some of my poetry collections and my romantic comedy screenplay.

In late October 2015,  Lays Wavy Chips chose to sponsor The Ticket on their reading list Inspiring Stories of Living Life to the Fullest. Reads on the Ticket climbed even higher, and I noticed so too did sales and borrows of my other books on Kindle.

By mid-November 2015, my sales had gradually increased to daily sales or borrows in either Canada, the UK, the USA, India, France, and Denmark. I also noticed a great increase in Facebook and WordPress followers (by the hundreds!) So, if you’re wondering if followers on Wattpad will look you up and see what else you’ve written, it has become obvious to me that yes, they do. And, given a little time, many will end up buying your other stories.

My sales have definitely increased since The Ticket reached #1 in Chicklit on Wattpad in July and it was chosen to be sponsored by Lays Wavy in October. I’ve also noticed more and more of my followers engaging with me, asking questions, making my time on social media more enjoyable. What’s not to love about that?

Fast forward to today: The Ticket, which I penned  and uploaded chapter by chapter on Wattpad last April -June has been chosen as a Featured Story in Chicklit! Getting featured on Wattpad means your story has a chance to be seen and read more than the millions of other works on the site. It’s a wonderful opportunity.

The only downside is Wattpad asks featured authors to not publish their work for six months, so that all their readers have a chance to read the story in full. I’d planned to self-publish The Ticket in February, but I’m happy to wait until July, and see what this “being featured,” really brings.  I’ve also started to pen my next novel, The Match, on Wattpad. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with that project.

So, you’re a professional author, and you’re trying to make a living. Is Wattpad for you? I can’t determine how many of my sales in 2015 are due to my time spent on Wattpad, but I do know my sales have greatly increased, I have thousands more followers, and I’m having a wonderful time while I work. If that doesn’t convince you to join the Wonderful World of Wattpad perhaps you should just click your ruby slippers, and go back home. 🙂

Best wishes,

Heather
